1973-1978    Early Work

Painting the landscape around Portland, Maine was an initial interest, but gave way to the notion of the canvas as a flat, shallow pictorial space in which to invent new images.  A series of hard-edge color paintings emerged, which became the source for further evolution toward explorations in abstraction.  The results embodied formal concerns, and in the mid-70's, incorporated references to nature and landscape, before gradually returning to a purely abstract approach.
